Chlorine Damage to Long Hair

Filed under: Long Hair Care — Stephanie

Swimming is great exercise. However, all the chlorine that keeps the water sanitary is really bad for your hair.

A quick rinse is a good idea before you go swimming. Not only does it rinse off any dirt, keeping it from getting into the pool, but if you use fresh water it lets your hair absorb that first, rather than the chlorinated water.

After your swim you should at the very least repeat the clean water rinse. A clarifying shampoo will help get the chlorine out.

Alternatively, mix equal quantities of shampoo with baking soda. This is not something you should do often; monthly should suffice.

Some people put oil in their hair before swimming. This will also keep your hair from absorbing so much water, and therefore chlorine. Use whichever one you prefer for deep conditioning. I personally love jojoba oil for my hair, as it is light are does a great job of making it feel softer.

Chlorine can be just brutal to long hair. The right steps can minimize the damage.

I agree totally. I’ve swam the majority of my life and have never had short hair. Look for shampoo specifically designed for swimmers, especially suseptable blondes.
