Coping with Split Ends

Filed under: Long Hair Care — Stephanie

Split ends are a major problem when you grow out your hair. The longer your hair gets, the older the ends are, so the more likely it is to split.

Split ends are a result of damage to the cuticle of the hair. Damage can be a result of chemicals used in the hair, such as hair dyes, hair spray, gels and other chemicals. Rough brushing can also cause damage, as can cheap hairbrushes.

Never brush your hair when it is wet. That makes it easier to damage, resulting in more split ends.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to limit the damage you do to your hair.

  • To remove split ends, take a small section of hair and gently twist it. The split ends will pop out and you can easily cut them. Remove split ends regularly.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat well.
  • Protect your hair from heat, including the sun on hot days. This can dry it out, making the ends more likely to split.
  • Use a good quality conditioner.
  • Massage your scalp

Growing your hair out long is a great way to feel great about how you look. It’s feminine and very appealing. Grow your hair out and delight in the number of people who admire your hair.
