I'm glad i came across this site and the comments, because, as a woman in her early 60's who's had long, extremely naturally curly hair for most of her life (due having had short hair on occasion, hated it, and couldn't wait for it to grow back long), it has re-inforced my decision to keep my very naturally curly hair long.

hi , saying that older women cannot have long hair is a completely western concept. I am from india older women never cut their hair, actually after fifty it i sconsidered strange to cut hair, hair is worn by even eighty five , ninety year old ladies with grace in buns or updos or braids or loose.. long hair looks divine on older girls. grow out your hair western sisters .. hair is the crowning glory of women. Age is merely age , beauty is not attached to numbers.

It is SO nice to see other women with long hair and ideas of keeping it long, Thank you for making me feel better about my choice. I am in my late 50's, I've almost always had long hair. It is to my waist, very thick, very straight. getting pretty grey. My husband convinced me to cut bangs. As of the last several years I always wear it up in what (I am told is elegant) very easy manner that may help some. It takes me less than 10 minutes, start to finish. First I back comb just a little on top to give a little lift (and I curl my bangs with a hot iron) I then french braid it down the back, starting pretty high, making sure it isn't too tight at the top but very snug as you reach the neck, keep braiding to the very ends of your hair and I usually put a small band in to hold it, then I bring the braid back up over the french braid, fold under the ends so the length matches the length of the french braid and secure it, usually with a large bear claw clip. This will hold all day and is comfortable and looks neat. I have never found any other way that doesn't pull, or hurt or fall out.

I think the short hair rule for women over 40 came along with the out to pasture line for older women. My grandmother had waist long hair until the day she died at 85. She wore it up in a graceful sophisticated and feminine hairstyle. She was timeless and looked beautiful her entire life. Living Nana's way!

My hair has been thin and fine all of my life. Both of my parents had thin fine hair, so I cannot expect to have thick hair, can I? To balance the thin hair gene, my parents' hair did not turn fully gray until they were well past 70 (80 in my mother's case) At 63, I have a few gray streaks in my waist-length hair, and someone who hadn't seen me for over a decade was surprised how little gray is in my hair. He asked me if I was coloring my hair. I am not, but a few years ago I did color my hair for about a year. Hair dye damaged my hair so much that about 4-5 inches of it gradually broke off. My hair is now close to the below waist length it was before I colored it. I never go to the hairdresser. I don't trust them! I never had layers cut into my hair. I trim the ends myself, straight across the bottom edge to make the hair appear thicker. I trim my hair with very sharp scissors according to the "best days to cut hair to increase growth" in the Farmer's Almanac.

Andrea, my hair is actually quite thin and fragile (because of life-long thyroid problems), so I do a few things: I never let it get straggly, which means an occasional trim, and I keep a very subtle part far on the right side so that extra hair sweeps across the crown of my head, where my hair is the thinnest. Since my hair is curly, I end up fooling everyone. No one suspects that my hair is thin. I've had people tell me that when they can't remember my name I'm referred to as "the one with the hair," lol. The only person who hates my hair is my mother, who has helmet head and who looks very masculine. Wish there was a way to post a photo on this thread... I'd love to show off my mermaid hair and see everyone else's!!

i am also getting older 58,and i don't mind some of the longer layers or the occasional grey hairs here and there, what i don't like is the really short ones at the top of my head when she thinned my hair out and it's still really short, they are going to take years to grow out and i don't know what she was thinking when she was doing it,but every time i see the back it makes me annoyed.
