Sometimes my cyclomethicone shine spray is the only way I can get a brush through my long hair. I spray it on my brush, then carefully brush it through.

I have extremely thick hip length hair and my hair /hates/ cones. I used to use them, and they gave me dull, frizzy hair with a waxy scalp and fluffy dry ends. After transitioning to no cones, my hair is softer, less frizzy, and the ends are in better condition. I know someone with the same type of hair as me whose hair reacts the opposite way to cones...so it's pretty much impossible to determine if you hair will like cones/no cones.

Regardless of length someone with thin, soft textured hair is not going to need or like products/ingredients that would work better for someone with thick, coarse textured hair. If you want to avoid buildup use a clarifying shampoo every few washes. When you wash your hair concentrate on the scalp & when you condition apply it to your length only-same goes for styling products. Less is best when using styling prodcts. That is another big reason why people say their hair is weighed down. They use too much product AND apply it to their scalp. Start with a pea sized amount- you can always build up but once you've used too much product you can't go back.
