Why Long Hair?

Long hair care tips

Using Hairsticks

Filed under: Long Hair Care, Long Hair Styles — Stephanie

I’ve recently discovered how delightful hairsticks can be for putting up my hair. No elastic to pull my hair, and they hold really well.

The challenge, however, can be in keeping the hairsticks from pulling painfully tight. For many styles, a single hairstick will hold the whole thing up. A second can tighten things up even further, but that can be the problem. Too tight means you might break or strain your hair; not exactly good when you’re going for length.

To put a hairstick into your hairstyle is pretty simple. Buns and French twists work pretty well with hairsticks. Just put your hair into the style, then start weaving in the stick. I generally start by pointing the stick at the back of my head through one side of the style until it touches the back of my head, then turning it to go through the hairstyle, using a sort of weaving motion to catch more hair.

The second hairstick may or may not be necessary. Sometimes I’ll use it to pin the hair on one side a little closer to the head. Sometimes it’s purely decorative. Sometimes it gives a little more support that is really necessary to the stability of the hairstyle.

You can buy hairsticks very easily on eBay. Bone and wood are two very popular materials. There are some pretty fancy styles available when you shop on eBay, or you can get plain ones.

I like to buy the plain ones and decorate them. Even a simple coat of paint with some varnish really adds to the look. Most are drilled on one end, so you can add beads and other decorations. I’ll discuss that in a later post; I have some new ideas I want to try to make things a little easier, but I don’t know how well they’ll work. If they work as I hope, I’ll post them.

A nice inexpensive way to make a bunch of hair sticks to decorate is to pick up a big bag of chopsticks from your local restaurant supply store. Once you sand them down to ensure that they won’t snag on your hair. They are ready to paint and decorate.
